Bus hub sparks blame game BY GABRIELLE STUART

A war of words has broken out over the failed plan to put a bus hub at Westfield Riccarton. Discussions between mall management and the city council have broken down, leaving where the hub will be sited up in the air. It has frustrated Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora who has blamed Westfield management for the plan falling through. He said the mall management would not lease their land for the hub because it did not include a land swap with the city council for the Riccarton Community Centre site on Clarence St. However, the mall management have blamed the collapse of the deal on the city council.

Justin Lynch, director of Scentre Group, which owns Westfield New Zealand, said he was willing to continue discussions. “We have been supportive of the plans to the point where we have designed a concept scheme for a combined bus interchange and community centre.” The plan was to create a combined bus interchange and community centre on the land, which would be swapped for the community centre site. However, the Clarence St land could not be used as part of the deal because staff would have to go through city council processes before they could sell the land, and the future of the community centre had not been decided. • Turn to page 3

Apprentices win awards Avonhead carpentry apprentice Tom Southen has been named the Central South Island Registered Master Builders Carters 2014 Apprentice of the Year. The 22-year-old, who is employed by Farmbuild impressed the judges who said he presented an outstanding project that comprehensively showed his broad knowledge and ability in construction. “Tom’s involvement in his project from site set-out to handover required a high degree of planning and a clear technical understanding of various structural and finishing materials. He displayed leadership across his interaction with clients and sub trades and ensured a high level of health and safety procedures. “Tom’s toolkit, work vehicle and overall personal presentation were nothing short of exemplary, displaying attributes any professional builder would be proud of.” His prizes included $2000 to be spent at Carters or put towards a study grant, and a place at an Outward Bound Leadership Programme. Second place in the central South Island was awarded to Lucas Syminton of Greymouth, while third place went to Andrew Inch, 22, of St Albans, who is employed by Chris Beer Construction in Ferrymead. The results were announced last week.

TOP APPRENTICES: Central South Island Registered Master Builders Carters 2014 Apprentice of the Year Tom Southen (centre), with runner-up Lucas Syminton, and Andrew Inch, who was third. Mr Southen will go on to compete against the winners from eight other regions at the national competition in Auckland. Finalists will then compete in a practical carpentry challenge where each apprentice will be tasked with completing a small building project, which will be gifted to local charities. Registered Master Builders acting chief executive Brendon

Ward said it was gratifying to see a strong group of contenders putting themselves forward. “Apprentices who are willing to stand up and strive to be the best they can be demonstrate the excellent talent coming through our building and construction industry. The builders who take on those apprentices should also be praised for their contribution to the growth and succession of

the sector.” Simon Henderson, general manager sales & operations at Carters, said that as the building industry continued to strengthen and expand, it was important that apprentices continued to strive for excellence. Petition for new library building

BY GABRIELLE STUART

More than 3350 people have signed a petition calling for a new Bishopdale Library and Community Centre in the area. But with discussions about the future of the facility held behind closed doors, they will not get an answer from the city council until Thursday. The library has been run from a temporary premises in the Bishopdale Mall, since the building was closed due to structural earthquake damage. The city council planned to re-

pair the building, but the plans stalled this year as the repair was likely to cost more than double the $1.2 million allocated for repairs. Options for the centre are expected to be announced this week as part of an update on the city council community facilities rebuild programme. A meeting is being held on Thursday to make the announcements. Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said the facility was the busiest community centre in the city before the earthquakes, with regular

bookings from 25 different groups. She said the older facility was difficult to access and lacked heating and ventilation, and said a new build would be better than a rebuild. She said the overwhelming feeling from the community was that they wanted a new purpose-built facility, even if it was smaller. Petition organiser Marilyn Henderson presented the petition to the city council at their meeting on Thursday. She told them a library and community centre would “put the heart back into the community”. “The people of Bishopdale and

surrounding areas are really missing the busy complex and desperately need it back.” She said limited space at the temporary library meant people in wheelchairs were not able to use it, while the library did not have enough space to run some of their programmes. “While the librarians are doing a marvellous job in the temporary library, it’s not meeting our needs.” The city council announcements about the community facilities rebuild will be filmed on Thursday, and posted on the city council website.

Inspired by young to help them Harcourts International director Paul Wright is one of the founders of the Inspire Foundation, which helps fund young people in Canterbury to achieve their goals. He speaks to Gabrielle Stuart about the great things young Cantabrians are achieving across the world. If you could sum up the aims of the Inspire Foundation in a few words, how would you describe it? Inspire Foundation is a special Canterbury based charitable organisation that we set up postearthquake to help fund talented young Cantabrians, some who were quite affected by the earthquakes. It has now grown into an organisation that supports the future leaders of Canterbury. So how did you personally get involved? I’ve been involved for a number of years in the Harcourts Foundation with my business partner Mike Green, and I have a friend, Bob Davison, who chairs the Mainland Foundation. Both of us over the years have been inundated by applications from individuals, young people especially. Neither of those organisations are geared up for funding individuals, and actually organisations that fund individuals are few and far between. So it just came up in conversations. We both knew there were large numbers of young people who had a dream, who want to do something like study dance in Russia or

championship, and he’s now looking an absolute star in that area. How many do you want? The list goes on and on and on. We started from scratch three years ago, and we’ve now given funds to grantees in every sort of endeavour. We recently heard from a student who created an engine that runs on any sort of fuel. He wants to develop it so it can be used in the Third World to help some of the poorest nations develop. We also run business skills training courses, so we can pass on the things we’ve learnt in our business careers to these young people. Do you do any of the teaching yourself? I take one of the classes, teach business planning. I’ve done some teaching before through Harcourts, teaching business planning to some of our staff, but this is a bit different. They must be fascinating to teach. It is, because they’re like sponges, they’re quick to adopt what you teach and many are quite bright. You know you’re laying a fantastic base for the future. It’s about teaching these kids to raise the bar, and spend time on the business side of their endeavours rather than just the practical side. Talking about things like building databases, one person might say I’ve got 150 names on my database and I’ve raised $65,000 for my sport or field, and suddenly they see the value of building those connections.

study waterskiing in Florida, and we set up this foundation to fund those cases. We started it from scratch three years ago. What are some of the cases that have really stood out to you over those years? Some of the ones that have been exceptional are people like Anton Cooper, who came to us because he was trying to raise money to go and compete overseas. He’s now been crowned mountain biking world champion. Then there’s Tasman Davids, who was trying to get to St Petersburg to study ballet and is now very successful dancing over there. There’s Sophie Pascoe, who we supported when there were no swimming pools available three years ago, so she was flying out of Christchurch to train. Hayden Withers has won a world dancing

Like clubs of all descriptions Riccarton Rotary is always seeking new members. As the second oldest club in Christchurch our membership is aging and we are actively seeking younger new members to help guide us into the future. We pride ourselves on being a “mixed” club – in fact over 25% of our current members are women. We would like to see a bigger mix of ethnicity within our club. And we would like to see a wider span of ages. There is a cost to being a Rotarian but you do not need to be “rich” to belong. You do not need to be a leading business person. We want within our club a representation of our community so that as a club we can assist to address community issues. Why would you want to be a member of Riccarton Rotary? • There is a huge amount of business and professional experience within the club. Younger members benefit from networking – older members from mentoring. • More importantly there is the satisfaction of participating in activities designed to improve our environment through the financial and mentoring support of individuals, clubs and organisations. Riccarton Rotary is, through its ownership of the Riccarton Sunday Market, in an enviable position of having considerable funding available to support the community.

These days young people, young Kiwis especially, don’t seem to stay in one place for long. When you’re sending young people overseas, do you think any of them will return? A proportion of our people won’t return to Canterbury, but we think probably better than 50 per cent will. The ones who do come back will make change here, but the ones who spread across the globe are still influencers, and they do still stay in contact. If we get another dancer come through, Tasman would be the best person to help them make connections in Europe, so through that network if they’re

ye s

to address the problems in our communities is to train up leaders who will take responsibility for them. There are a lot of people who say the Government should be doing this, the council should do that. But there are very few people who will stand up, put their hand up and say I will solve this. Whenever that happens, whenever someone puts their hand up, things change. When people say I will build a swimming pool, I will start a school in Sri Lanka, that’s what will bring change in our community. Can I ask, do you have any children yourself? Yes, I have three daughters. Claire is my eldest, she’s 30 and she’s now a business development manager for Harcourts. She represented New Zealand in ice hockey, so she spent a year studying overseas and I followed her around the world for a while. My middle daughter, Jacqui, has also worked for Harcourts, and my youngest

SUCCESSFUL: Sophie Pascoe and Hayden Withers are some of the young talents who have received support from the Inspire Foundation. daughter, Sally, is now working in the Mediterranean with her fiance, living a life of luxury. Did your own daughters inspire your work with young people? Actually, one of my daughters, when she was younger, saw me doing business planning with some of my business associates and asked me if I could do something similar, tailored to her age group. So she organised a whole group of her friends, and we used to hold sessions every six months or so with 10 to 20 of her friends. I taught them business planning, and used to partner them up and help them set goals, and it was amazing how quickly they achieved those. It was amazing over the years to see the progress of these young people. Some of those kids are still in their 20s and own two or three gyms or are achieving great things overseas. That was when I realised the powerful influence in that sort of programme, which is something we brought, later on, to Inspire.

still connected they will help Cantabrians, but in a different way. Are you a born and bred Cantabrian yourself? I was actually born in Dunedin, but I came to Christchurch at about five, and have lived here all my life. I don’t want to say how many years that is! I went to St Thomas’s here, which was a great experience. What is it that has kept you here? I’ve had the opportunity to move but I like the community here. If I want to dive I can head to Akaroa, and if I want to ski it’s not far to Mt Hutt. I can easily fly to the office in Sydney or Auckland if I need to. I like the environment of the Garden City, I like the values of people here and I love the rugby. There’s almost everything here, and if not I can fly in a couple of hours to be where I need to be. Has working with these young people, who are doing amazing things, inspired you to set any of your own goals? That’s a really good question. Working with them is very inspiring. I think what they’ve done is shown us how vital and necessary the Inspire Foundation is. Hence our drive to build a capital fund, to fund future generations long after Bob and I are gone. We’ve been very inspired by how successful it’s been, and how much the members really enjoy it and how proud they are of what these young kids achieve. So I think, for me, they’ve inspired me to just keep on and keep driving this forward.

Am

What skills do you think these young people need most, that they might not learn elsewhere? Well, we take a pretty practical approach. Most in demand is the mental skills and mental management area. Gilbert Enoka, who teaches mental skills for the All Blacks, came in and taught some of our grantees how to deal with adversity when things aren’t going your way. It’s something every young person and every athlete deals with, when they get sick, when they get injured, when people turn them down. It’s about how to deal with failure. I think that’s something everyone needs to learn. It must be very rewarding work. For us, seeing talent supported and seeing these guys achieve these goals and seeing them grow is hugely rewarding. You listen to these young people speak at our functions, and you hear their dreams, they want to compete in the Olympics or create an engine that can pump water for Third World nations, and then they go out and achieve their goals. One of the young people, Alex, had the dream of working in the slums in Sri Lanka, using cricket to teach children. He’s 22, and he’s now set up two schools working with about 200 kids. It’s stupendous. These are the people who are going to be the future prime ministers and leaders of our communities. Part of the motivation behind this is that we believe the only way

Bonded to rugby Former Christchurch Boys’ High School deputy head boy Ruaridh Mackenzie has been awarded a rugby excellence scholarship at Bond University on the Gold Coast. The 18-year-old loose forward was one of two students to be given the scholarship, and will begin his studies next January. He made the decision to move to Australia after falling in love with the Gold Coast during an interview at Bond last November. “When I came for my interview for the scholarship and they showed me around the university. I loved it so much, I was really determined to come here,” he said. “When I found out I’d won the scholarship I just jumped at it – this is where everyone comes on holiday from New Zealand, it’s a great place to be.” Mackenzie is studying towards a diploma in sport management and is considering switching to a business degree in future years. He has been appointed captain of Bond University Rugby Club’s new premier colts side, where he dons the No 8 jersey and is hoping to play for the Queensland Reds under-20s in

the ball around and playing a more expansive game.” “It’s a great time to be here, especially with the start of the new National Rugby Championship later this year. I’ve played off the bench in a couple of Bond’s premier games and the exposure to the stronger men’s game is invaluable.” Mackenzie boasts a formidable rugby pedigree, with his father representing Scotland as a prop in the 1980s before moving to New Zealand when he was

just three months old. Raised on a beef and crop farm near Christchurch, he boarded at the prestigious Christchurch Boys’ High School where he was vice-captain of the school’s first XV and first XI. He was also selected to play in the Crusaders’ under-18 side in 2013. When he’s not playing rugby, the outdoors boy likes to try his hand at fly-fishing in some of the South Island’s spectacular rivers.

Inspiring teachers More than 1200 teachers were nominated in the first week of the New Zealand’s Most Inspiring Teacher campaign, with 360 nominations for Canterbury teachers. The annual competition is organised by Warehouse Stationery, with more than $40,000 worth of travel, stationery and technology prizes awarded to the teachers who receive the highest number of votes. Some of the local nominations are included below. People can vote for their teachers at www.inspiringteachers.co.nz. Voting closes on Sunday. • Mr Chris Walker – Russley School Mr Walker is a dedicated teacher at Russley School, he has a unique way of engaging his students so they can get the best from their learning experience. He brings fun and laughter into the classroom. Not only does he teach his students but he also is the driving force in the school’s annual productions. If you walk through the school all the students are usual going up to him to have a chat. My daughter is a very quiet child but he has managed to draw her out of her shell with his special brand of teaching and fun. • Ms Jane Lennon – Westburn School Jane Lennon is the most amazing, inspiring teacher Westburn School has. She inspires the children not only to succeed in her year but also for the rest of their lives. Her students are so very well prepared to start a very successful five-year journey at high school and beyond. She remembers her past students by name and keeps encouraging them throughout their education. We are so very lucky to have a teacher like her at our school.

• Miss Patterson – Merrin School Miss Patterson started with a blank hall to teach the new students in and has turned it into a creativity wonderland. She is patient and dedicated to bringing out the best in every student in her class. My daughter has learnt so much from Miss Patterson. She takes the time to know every student and has lots of fun while teaching! She is down to earth and such a dedicated hard working person. • Miss Lynette O’Connor – Oaklands School My most inspiring teacher shows the qualities of enthusiasm, creativity, dedication and drive in the following ways: She is the funniest teacher in the world. Also she is an inspiring teacher to everyone, I think she is very creative because she invents lots of fun activities and makes everyone laugh which are very inspiring to me and lots of other people. She helps me a lot in my learning and makes me want to keep learning forever but Miss O always makes learning fun which makes me feel like I am having fun and never feels like I am learning. But most of all Miss O gives me confidence to be me and be proud of who I am. Miss O is the best teacher in the world. • Mrs Melissa Clarke – Riccarton High School My most inspiring teacher shows the qualities of Enthusiasm, Creativity, Dedication and Drive in the following ways: Mrs. Clarke is my Social Studies teacher. When I started school at the start of this year I didn’t like social studies much but my teacher made it fun by adding activities in our classtime that actually lets us know more about the subject and I started to like it. She is always so entusiastic and funny and all the students in her class leave the room with a smile on their face.

The Salvation Army - out and about in Christchurch North T he Salvation Army have always been an integral part of the community helping in the dayto-day struggles which many face. They have a name synonymous with practical Christianity, deeply committed to making a difference in the lives of the people around them. We are beginning to develop and implement ways of serving the community in Christchurch North. “We want people to be aware that we are here in Belfast, happy to go out and work alongside others whenever it is necessary,” says Gill Waugh. The Salvation Army helps in a variety of ways, packing up houses for EQC repairs, taking people to a hospital appointment, or even advocating for people when they need support. The Salvation Army campervan is about connecting with people wherever they are in the community. Every Thursday it is parked behind the Family Store in Cranford Street so feel free to come and chat with one of the team. The campervan carries helpful information or it may be about just having someone to talk to over a coffee. It can be difficult to approach an agency for help when someone is in the hardest time of their life. The Salvation Army offer Advocacy support, working alongside government agencies WINZ and Housing Corp to facilitate people who need help

in the accommodation process, not to duplicate what is already being done. People often do not know how to access what is available. A positive effect of the trauma caused by the Canterbury earthquakes has been the community feeling which has grown. “Streets have become neighbourhoods again,” says Neil Waugh. “We want this to continue to grow, building on the strong feeling of community which came amid the devastation.” We want to support the strengthening of families, neighbourhoods where people feel safe, valued and are connecting with each other. They recently arranged a Community Day for the Northcote area in the Northcote School grounds. Watch out for the next one on October.

The Salvation Army go into the community with no agenda, committed to building trust and developing relationships with people. Drop into the campervan or call the church office on 323 8257. Open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

TEAMWORK: Firefighters and an ambulance crew work side by side after a car crash. PHOTO: PIER SMULDERS

Win-win situation in emergencies BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

We’ve made it through to September which means that it is officially spring. For once winter seems to have passed in no time without major weather-related events. Firefighters are the backup to our ambulance colleagues and that has been in place for a while which means steady callout numbers. There were 18 of these calls this week amongst the 85

in total, which corresponds with a decrease in some of the other things we do. It would appear that fires and false alarms are down. That’s got to be a good thing. And for the ambulance officers, the assistance of four fit firefighters has got to be advantageous. It’s what you’d call a win-win situation. Fires are dangerous, even small ones. An outside light fitting caught fire in Westmorland recently. A scramble by the neighbour to bring his garden hose to the rescue resulted in him falling off the fence, cutting his leg and giv-

ing himself bruising that will be a reminder for a while. He was treated by ambulance and allowed to go home, where he’s probably glaring at the fence every time he looks out the window. On the bright side, the fire was extinguished with minimal damage. Spring generally brings warmth and wind, which means vegetation and grass fires become more prevalent and more dangerous. Care and early reporting will keep these to a minimum. That’ll be another win.

Riccarton High School ERO report on school outstanding Following the visit of the Education Review Office team in June, their final report in July was fulsome in praise of the school. “Riccarton has a diverse mix of students. This diversity enriches students’ learning. The school is effectively supporting student learning through providing a rich and varied curriculum. A positive school culture fosters students’ sense of well-being and belonging. The school is very well governed, led and managed.” Principal Phil Holstein said, “We are very pleased with our review report, as it was a positive reflection of what is happening here. We are proud of our achievements and will continue to work hard for the benefit of our community.” Board of Trustees Chair Alan Aitken said: “In essence the ERO review shows that our school is well led, provides a quality diverse education and has a great culture where

people can thrive. That is really something to celebrate. I pay tribute to the passionate diligent professionalism of our Principal, senior leadership and staff at all levels which has produced this result.” He picked out this Review Office comment as being particularly effective: “The values and attitudes promoted

through the well-established ‘Riccarton Way’ foster a positive, inclusive school culture. This culture actively promotes student engagement, participation and learning. The Board, school leaders and staff are strongly committed to upholding school traditions that support students’ achievement and well-being.”

Climbing success

Riccarton entered three teams in the South Island Secondary Schools Climbing competition. The boys’ A team of Jarrod Alexander, Michael Lane and Dean Holdaway were 2nd. Jarrod was 3rd in the individual section with only 3 points separating the 3 places. The boys’ B team of Nathan Campbell, Mark Holdaway and Alex Robinson were 3rd. The girls’ team comprised Aimee Prentice, Panmai Kernkhunthot, Jamin Kim and Gemma Higgins.

Riccarton hosts sister school visit Riccarton High School hosted the biannual visit of 16 students and two staff from Takefu Higashi High School recently. The visit returns the Riccarton visit to Takefu in the April holidays. The visiting students were homestayed, took in some of the sights around Christchurch and further afield, and took part in classes with their hosts and others. Takefu were welcomed in a powhiri performed by our kapahaka group Students took part in a dance class in PE, being taught by Riccarton students.

Ozzie Yammit drives towards the basket in the basketball semifinals.

Riccarton achieved some good results recently while competing with Westland and Geraldine high schools. This week the following teams take part in Tournament Week – Netball A, Football Girls, Football Boys, Basketball Girls and Boys, and in Rugby, the Girls 7s.

The Riccarton Brain Bee team was placed second in the annual competition in Dunedin. The team comprised Rachel Wu, Jamin Kim, Gemma Higgins and Maegan Mallari. Rachel was placed second in the individual section and Jamin was third.

The Year 10 Textiles class got inspiration for an upcoming project from two colourful sheep that appeared during the last holidays. The friendly looking animal sculptures, covered in a crochet and knitted patchwork and accompanied by a bunch of knitted flowers, were a random act of kindness from a group called the Ninja Knitters.

Volunteers Needed The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

V

olunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing. Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning. Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs. With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds. Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.” This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer. “We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.” If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opening night

at on a Hot Tin Roof, the story of a dysfunctional family at war with itself, premiered at The Elmwood Auditorium on August 22. The themes of greed, repression, toxic relationships remain as fresh and relevant as when Tennessee Williams penned it in 1955. Produced by Canterbury Repertory Theatre and directed by Annette Searle, the first night performance kept the audience enthralled with the cast’s delivery of the wit, dark humour and sarcasm contained in this play. Acted at floor level rather than on a raised stage gave an intimacy and contact with the players which enhanced the effect of the production. Feelings ran high among the watchers who responded with appreciative applause.

Magnificent magnolias Late winter is the season when the deciduous magnolias are at their best. August seems to force these gorgeous flowers to open in a rush. The breathtaking sight of the large, tulip-like blooms perching on bare branches can send passers-by rushing to the nursery to buy something similar. There are dozens of magnolia varieties, and making a choice can be a formidable task. The names are confusing so it’s usually easiest to forget nomenclature and just go for the flower you like most (remembering, of course, to check the ultimate height on the label). Most grow into small trees but, if space is tight, look for one of the shrub-sized star magnolias. Because magnolias come from cool climates with rich, moisture-holding soil, keeping them happy through hot New Zealand summers can be a challenge. It’s important to take the opportunity to improve the soil as much as possible before planting. Choose a spot that gets at least half a day’s sun and is protected from strong winds. Start by clearing grass or

ground-covering plants from an area about a metre across, then dig plenty of manure or good compost and some long-lasting fertiliser into the soil. Because magnolias hate being dry, it can also be helpful to add some water-storing crystals into the planting area. Create a planting hole that’s about twice the size of the pot and about the same depth. Take the plant out of the pot with care (magnolias hate root disturbance) and sit it into the planting hole. Backfill, then water well to settle everything into place. Lastly, spread a layer of organic mulch. This will keep the soil moist and stop competitive grass from growing back over the root area. Once the magnolia is well established you can plant some bulbs around the base to add extra interest in late winter and spring.

Halswell Rugby League Football Club

Arbor-Tek Limited is proud sponsors of the Halswell Rugby League Football Club. Their sponsorship provides the Club with financial assistance, which helps in the running of the club. This season the Premier Team, coached by Darrel Coad and managed by Craig Sullivan started their 2014 season preparation in December 2013. They were runners up in the pre-season tournament and beaten by the Riccarton Knights in the final game. On the Saturday before the Grand Final there was a Captains run at the Halswell Domain in the afternoon to give supporters an opportunity to watch their premier side train. After the Captains run there was a presentation, and a jersey presented to each player. These jerseys

were presented by two very ardent Halswell Hornet Club members. Merv Whittaker, who has done alot of work for the Club over many years, and Tracie Martin whose health hasn’t been the best as Tracie was diagnosed with Leukaemia 12 months ago. The players appreciated Merv, Tracie and all the other supporters attendance at the Captains run. You could sense from their words and actions towards Merv and Tracie that they had a desire to bring the Premiership Cup home for these two special people and the Halswell Hornet Club members. In particular the Junior section of our great Club. Without the Junior section, this Club wouldn’t be one of the best Club’s in the country.

enhancing social cohesion, addressing ecological concerns, increased confidence and improved career prospects. Participation in communities is another outcome related to learning. Learners often want to give something back. The Government priorities for Adult and Community Education (ACE) include literacy, numeracy, English language (ESOL), te Reo Māori and sign language. Providers all over this country offer learning in these core areas and also in many others. Courses not eligible for funding are often run with experts contributing on koha or on a low fee, or totally voluntary basis. Adult Learners’ Week/He Tangata Mātauranga is organised by ACE Aotearoa and is supported by the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO. It incorporates International Literacy Day on September 8.

While most Term 3 courses at the WEA are well underway two half-day Saturday seminars in September focus attention on the Middle East. ‘The Middle East, between Modernity and Traditionalism’ is the topic for Saturday, September 6, and will provide a brief historical background of the Middle East region since the emergence of Islam to the present day. The seminar will include the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century; colonisation and post-colonisation

However, the lure of beauty therapy was strong. “As I got older I decided it was time to do something for me. This is something I really wanted to do.’’ Last year she completed the polytechnic’s Certificate in Beauty Skills programme, which is an introduction to the Beauty Therapy course. “That course was really fantastic and I got a taste of what the Beauty Therapy course would be like. I realised I could handle being a mum and studying at the same time.’’ Virginia had already set up a room in her house as a clinic. The doors will open for business once she graduates.

dult Learners’ We e k / H e T a n g a t a Mātauranga celebrates all adult learning whether it’s upskilling for a better job, preparing for further study, for improving life skills, working out your learning journey, learning how to organise with others, or having fun. This year, the week will be launched in Christchurch on September 8, with a focus on how the rebuild has encouraged women into trades. The launch, hosted by CPIT, will be held at the new Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre and will feature women currently undergoing trade training. This country has a strong culture of adult learning, and every year tens of thousands of people take part in some form of communitybased learning. Dr Jo Lake, Director of Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa, says many communities in Aotearoa have been transformed through communitybased learning initiatives provided in and by educational institutions including schools, NGOs, community houses or on marae. She says, “It’s not just technical skills that are enhanced through learning. When adult learners share their stories, they talk about improvements in speaking, reading and writing English, understanding numbers and speaking Māori. They also talk about benefits like better self-esteem, greater tolerance,

The tutor for the seminar is Karim Pourhamzavi, a postgraduate student in political science and sociology at the University of Canterbury. Edward Said (1935-2003) was a PalestinianAmerican whose academic works, especially his book Orientalism (1978) had a major influence on the humanities and Middle Eastern studies. How a spelling error gave Cleveland its name By Jack May

I

n 1796 a community of American settlers in Ohio developed into a town. The elders decided to call their town Cleaveland, after General Moses Cleaveland, a land surveyor who marked out the town’s boundaries. In 1831 the town’s first proper newspaper was formed. The editor wanted to make a big splash with the first edition, so he proclaimed the formation of The Cleveland Advertiser. There wasn’t enough width on the front page to put the big masthead type in one line, so he made an instant decision to leave out the first A in Cleaveland. No one seemed to notice and the incorrect spelling stuck to the newspaper and city it served. “Checking spelling is always important,” said Brian Morris, Principal of New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Whether a mistake is deliberate or accidental, the impact can last for years. “That’s what also happened to the town of Novi. When stage coaches rolled out of Detroit there were designated stopping points where passengers could alight or board the coach. The sixth stopping point had a simple trail sign ‘No VI’. Over time people who didn’t understand Roman numerals simply called the place NOVI.” Fastidious spellers who want to become professional proofreaders and book editors should request the free information pack from NZIBS Proofreading Institute. lthough many things have changed over the past 60 years at the Christchurch School of Music, the focus on fostering a lifelong love of music has remained constant. Adult students are now an integral part of the CSM community. Many of our adult students enjoy weekly instrumental, theory or vocal lessons, but we also offer fortnightly options or blocks of lessons to cater for students who are too busy to practise regularly. Our “Learn with a Friend” option is popular with adults who prefer learning alongside someone they already know. At CSM, we encourage our students to play in an orchestra or ensemble. Playing with others is great fun and helps students to feel a part of our fabulous musical community. Our

range of Saturday and evening ensembles is extensive and varied, and include orchestras, rock bands, jazz combos, concert bands, wind ensembles and chamber music. If affordability is an issue, CSM can provide discounts of up to 50 per cent through funding provided by the Canterbury Community Trust. Visit www.csm.org.nz or phone the office on 366 1711 to find out what we can offer you.

Adult Learners’ Week at the Risingholme Community Centre

will enable Dip.Edit qualified people to work for publishers worldwide. Getting paid in NZ$, UK£ and US$ has its benefits. “Being 12 hours ahead of Europe gives our proofreaders a huge advantage,” said Morris. “Publishing is a 24/7 industry. Our people get paid ‘overnight service’ rates even though they mostly work 10am to 2pm in New Zealand. This suits parents with children at school.” Journalism training is also available.

The exhibition will feature SOUP can mugs, SOUP wall packets and other SOUP-related items. The theme SOUP is inspired by an American fundraising idea where ceramic students make bowls and then have an exhibition to auction or sell them off. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Glucomannan Fibre’s many health benefits

G

lucomannan fibre is produced from the root of the Konjac plant. In Japan it is called the “broom of the intestines”. In the stomach, it absorbs water and expands to form a bulky fibre. Then as it passes through the intestines and bowels, it has a gentle cleansing action helping remove waste material. It also appears to slow the absorption of sugar and cholesterol from the gut. In one fourweek study of healthy men, glucomannan decreased total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides as well as systolic blood pressure. Notably, triglycerides (a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease) were reduced by an amazing 23 per cent. Some studies have also shown glucomannan to help control sugar levels in diabetes as well as insulin sensitivity. Glucomannan has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of constipation and decrease fecal transit time, helping keep the intestines and bowels functioning well. This by itself may considerably improve health and help prevent chronic health problems. According to Dr Oz, glucomannan is “one of the best ways to control your hunger, the best appetite suppressant” and “nature’s skinny sponge”. If glucomannan is taken around 15 to 30 minutes before mealtimes with a large glass of water, it creates a sense of fullness by expanding to form a bulky fibre in the stomach. You feel full without feeling gassy or bloated. One study of obese individuals who took a total of two to four grams of glucomannan daily resulted in

111401387

significant weight loss, an average of 2.5kg over an eight-week period. When using glucomannan, it is essential to drink sufficient water, at least 250ml per one to two grams of glucomannan as it could possibly gum up your digestive system and cause a blockage in the esophagus or intestine. One of the biggest reasons for constipation is dehydration so drinking more is a good thing. Also it is best to start with a low dose and work up over a week or so to see how your body handles it. As a precaution, do not take straight before going to bed. If used correctly it appears to be an extremely beneficial supplement with numerous health benefits. Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy. ell-positioned on a back section to guarantee privacy, this Fendalton property on a prime parcel of 1131-square -metre land is a superb example of how to create expansive and well-designed living spaces inside and out. Designed by Michael Idiens Architects Ltd with ease of living in mind, the house was superbly executed by master builder Les O’Connell from Hebel and Block Construction. ENERGY-EFFICIENT

HEAT PUMPS

If you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

M

any housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation. Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9kW of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer. Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular providing climate controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems. Enviro Master Ltd are your air

conditioning and heat pump specialists and have been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now. Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump. Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We, at Enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period. For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch. We currently have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.
